Home»Car Seat Expiration Rules by Brand»When Do Safety 1st Car Seats Expire? (8 to 12 Years)
Safety 1st Grow and Go all in one car seat in a family vehicle

When Do Safety 1st Car Seats Expire? (8 to 12 Years)

Safety 1st does not give its whole lineup one lifespan. Its seats expire somewhere between 8 and 12 years after the date of manufacture, and the exact figure for your model is printed in its instruction manual. That range is wide enough that guessing is a bad idea. Check the manual if you still have it, check the shell either way, and if you want the answer calculated for you, enter the manufacture date into our Baby Car Seat Expiration Checker.

    Safety 1st Expiration Rules

    • 8 to 12 years: the general range Safety 1st (a Dorel Juvenile brand) publishes across its car seat range
    • 10 years: the Grow and Go all in one, the brand’s best known seat
    • 6 to 8 years: many older Safety 1st and Dorel seats, from before the current range

Here is the part that saves people a phone call. Many Dorel shells have a DO NOT USE AFTER date molded straight into the plastic. If your seat has one, that date outranks every general rule, including the ones in the manual and on this page. No sticker and no manual? Safety 1st consumer care can look the lifespan up from the model number and manufacture date on the seat’s sticker.

Where Is the Date on a Safety 1st Seat?

Start with the sticker on the back of the seat. It shows the date of manufacture and the model number. Then look at the shell itself, usually the bottom or the back, for a molded or printed expiration date. Between the sticker, the shell, and the manual, one of the three will give you the governing date.

What If the Seat Has Been in a Crash?

After a moderate or severe crash, the seat is replaced, always. Dorel goes a step further than the federal guideline and recommends replacing the seat even after a minor crash, and even if the seat was unoccupied when it happened. If you cannot tell how serious the crash was, call Safety 1st consumer care with the details before the seat goes back in the car.

Can You Fly With a Safety 1st Seat?

Harnessed Safety 1st seats are certified for use in motor vehicles and aircraft when used in harness mode, and the certification statement is on the seat’s labels. Booster mode is not certified for aircraft. So a Grow and Go being used with the vehicle belt cannot fly that way, even though the same seat could fly while harnessed.

    Safety 1st Expiration FAQs

How long are Safety 1st car seats good for?

Safety 1st says its seats expire 8 to 12 years after manufacture, depending on the product. The Grow and Go is a 10 year seat. Your exact lifespan is in the instruction manual, and many shells carry a molded do not use after date as well.

Where is the expiration date on a Safety 1st car seat?

Check two places: the sticker on the back of the seat, which lists the manufacture date and model number, and the plastic shell, which on many models has the expiration date molded in or printed on the bottom or back.

Does Safety 1st require replacement after a crash?

After a moderate or severe crash, yes, always. Dorel also recommends replacing the seat after a minor crash, even if it was empty at the time. When in doubt, ask consumer care before using the seat again.

    Check Your Safety 1st Seat

Read the sticker on the back, scan the shell for a molded date, then confirm everything in our Baby Car Seat Expiration Checker. Our overview of car seat expiration dates explains how brands land on such different numbers. And the official word lives on Safety 1st’s site at safety1st.com.
