INSTALLATION: 

The installation is as easy as the original KeyFit 30 base, but now it comes with an anti-rebound bar built right in. This feature is a great addition, as it improves the stability of the car seat and provides more legroom for your child.

In cars with less padded seat backs, such as the middle seat with a console, the installation may be a challenge because of the lack of cushioning for compression. For example, the KeyFit Max car seat did not install easily in the middle seat of my 2011 Acura MDX. But it installed perfectly in the outboard seats with no problems whatsoever.

The KeyFit Max car seat also installed perfectly in my Tesla Model 3 and Model X. I was very impressed, as Teslas are notoriously hard to match with car seats. In my Model 3, I could not install it behind the driver’s seat with my seat configuration (I am 5’6″), and my husband, who is 6’5″, would not have fit there either. Behind the passenger seat, I was able to move the front seat forward enough to allow access to the release handle while still providing sufficient legroom. LATCH INSTALLATIONS:

Chicco’s SuperCinch installation system makes LATCH installation easier. You still have to install the lower connectors, but it’s easier if you press down in the middle of the base while tightening the strap.

SEATBELT INSTALLATION:
The KeyFit Max comes with wide orange slide lock-offs for the shoulder strap. These lock-offs are backed with steel for added strength and longevity.

Chicco does not permit the use of pool noodles or rolled towels to adjust the recline position. To adjust the recline position, the built-in recline foot must be used. Due to the base being slightly longer than the standard KeyFit base, it is essential to ensure that no more than 4” protrudes past the edge of your vehicle seat.

BASLESS INSTALLATION:

The European belt guide is located at the back of the carrier, just below the release button, which makes the KeyFit Max rideshare compatible. Pass the lap belt through the top guides and buckle it, then guide the shoulder belt around the carrier and lock it into the Euro belt guide.

If your seatbelt is not long enough to guide around your car seat, you can still install it using only the lap belt, which you will route through the top guides. The Euro installation is very easy to accomplish, and on my Tesla, short seatbelts were not an issue.

CENTER LATCH INSTALLATIONS WITH NON-STANDARD SPACING:

Chicco will accommodate lower LATCH connectors in the center seat only if the LATCH connectors are spaced 11” apart. It is always important to refer to your vehicle’s owner’s manual. It is always important to ensure that your vehicle accommodates the use of LATCH in the center seat. If not, a seatbelt installation should be used.

INFLATABLE SEAT BELTS:

“Safety First”, Chicco confirms the KeyFit Max cannot be installed with inflatable seat belts found in some Ford, Lincoln, and Mercedes models. 

KEYFIT MAX STROLLER COMPATIBILITY:

The KeyFit Max can be snapped into any Chicco stroller that accepts a car seat, forming a convenient travel system. Chicco offers a variety of options, from full-size strollers and jogging strollers to frame-style models.

Compatibility with other stroller brands depends on whether a Chicco adapter is available. Many options exist, so don’t feel discouraged if your stroller brand isn’t Chicco.

BEST FOR CHILD:

The KeyFit Max includes two optional inserts: a newborn positioner and a head insert. Newborn positioner and head insert both are very important and very useful features and these features are helpful for new parents.  

• Newborn positioner: Suitable for babies weighing 5 –12 lbs. If used, it must be removed once the baby reaches 12 lbs. Position your baby’s bottom just in front of the seat bump for proper support. Newborn positioner basically protect the baby head.
• Head insert: Can be used with or without the newborn positioner. It is not very thick but may protrude slightly if not fully placed. This is the extra feature in this seat and this is also made for parents help.

Harness covers: These are optional. In the case of very small babies in rear-facing-only seats, I normally remove the covers because they can feel bulky, which is also true in this case. It is up to the parents to choose what they want. The harness straps are close together, and you have two choices: either use the harness covers or lift your baby’s clothing to cover the neck area. You can see the difference the newborn insert makes in the harness position. When I took out the positioner without moving the harness, the first photo illustrates how the harness is positioned at Romeo’s jawline, while the second photo without the insert illustrates how the harness is positioned.

The seat fit both my preemie and larger newborn dolls perfectly, and the harness adjuster operated smoothly and effortlessly. As I already above mentioned these both inserts are optional.

MAINTENANCE & EASE OF USE:

Here we discuss about maintenance of car seats and also how to use these seats. Taking off the well-padded cover for washing is not particularly enjoyable. On a difficulty level of 1-10. I did rate it about 5, largely because of the effort required to take it off around the plastic harness adjuster housing and headrest.

You do not have to remove the canopy completely, which is a good thing, but you do have to remove the elastics around the handle hubs and turn the toggles that hold the cover in place at the rear. Tip: When putting the elastics back, it helps to lift the canopy first and then put the elastics back on, which makes it a lot easier.

Chicco has ensured that the wipe-clean material is used in the most important areas, such as the seat and footwell. The cover is also machine-washable on a gentle cycle and can be hung out to dry. Rolling the cover in a towel first helps to remove excess water and speed up the drying process.

Harness curl: Watch for twisting at the hips. Although the harness strap is thick and durable, the buckle tongue opening is slightly narrower than the strap, which can cause the edges to curl and twist if pulled quickly.

Canopy: The front bar glides smoothly over the carrier, although the rest of the fabric needs both hands to pull it into place. Chicco is to be commended for making the fabric soft, quiet, and UPF 50+ sun-protective. The handle glides smoothly over the extended canopy.
